Background Checks: Upon hiring, Afton Home Care (AHC) must comply with DHS background check standards. DHS requires background checks for all workers providing direct support to vulnerable adults and minors.

Resignation from Your Position

Thank you for providing direct care services to clients supported by Afton Home Care, Inc. (AHC). We wish you the best in your future endeavors.

To formally resign from your position as a Direct Support Professional, please follow these steps:

  1. Submit Your Resignation in Writing:

    • AHC cannot process verbal resignations. Your resignation must be submitted in writing.

  2. Complete the Employment Exit Form:

    • This form is required to close your employment file.

  3. Inform Your Representative (Optional but Recommended):

    • AHC advises that you inform your Representative of your resignation before submitting the Employment Separation Form.

 

Reporting Work Accidents or Incidents

All Workers are required to immediately report any accident or incident to their Representative. This includes events involving either the Worker or the Participant. Reporting is required under the Vulnerable Adult Act and the Maltreatment of Minors Act, and it is essential to ensure both:

  • Participant safety, and

  • Compliance with workers’ compensation requirements.

 

Timely reporting helps protect everyone’s well-being and ensures appropriate follow-up.

Training

Upon hiring, Afton Home Care (AHC) complies with Minnesota DHS first aid training requirements. All staff are trained and expected to implement first aid practices as part of their role.

  • Training Format: In-person

  • Cost: Paid for by AHC

 

This ensures that staff are prepared to provide safe and effective care in emergency situations.

 

CPR Training

If a participant requests that staff be CPR certified, Afton Home Care staff will be trained in CPR and are expected to implement CPR procedures as needed to ensure the participant’s safety.

  • Training Format: In-person

  • Cost: Paid for by AHC

 

Training:

Workers providing direct support to clients are required by the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) to complete Onboarding Training upon hire and Annual Training every year.

 

Why Do I Need to Complete Training?

As a direct support worker providing services under Minnesota Licensed Services (245D), you are required to complete a set number of training hours.

 

This training ensures that all staff:

  • Understand and follow policies and procedures

  • Are prepared to provide safe, effective, and person-centered support

  • Complete required training both upon hire and annually

 

The appropriate training is assigned by AHC’s Human Resources.
If you believe you have been assigned the wrong training, please contact HR immediately.

 

When Is My Training Due?

  • Onboarding Training

    • Must be completed within 60 days of your hire date.

    • You will receive a specific due date in your hire notification (see STAR Services’ Training Schedule for specific dates).

  • Annual Training

  • Frequency: Conducted every year.

  • Deadline: Must be completed by the end of the assigned month each year (see STAR Services’ Training Schedule for specific dates).

 

Important:
If training is not completed by the deadline, AHC’s Human Resources will notify you that you cannot provide direct support services to clients until the required training is completed.

 

How to Complete Your Training

Training is completed online through the STAR Services website.

 

Steps to Access Your Training:

  1. Go to the STAR Services website.

  2. Log in with your assigned username and password:

    • Login name: (example: JaneDoe)

    • Password: (example: Password1!)

  3. Once logged in, your home page will display your assigned training.

  4. Training can be completed in one sitting or over multiple sessions.

  5. You can complete training on a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

  6. You will be directed to your personal learner page, where you can view and complete all your assignments.

 

Completing Lessons and Tests on STAR Services

Viewing a Lesson:

  1. Click the “View” button next to My eLearning Lessons.

  2. Click the name of the lesson you wish to begin.

  3. Click “Start the Lesson” to begin.

    • Note: Lessons include a voiceover, so speakers or headphones are required to hear the narration.

 

Taking the Test:

  1. After finishing the lesson, close the lesson window and return to the lessons page.

  2. Click the name of the lesson again to reopen it (if needed).

  3. Click the “Mark Complete” button to indicate that you have finished the lesson.

  4. Click the “Take the Test” button to complete the assessment.

 

Will I Get Paid for Training?

Afton Home Care has paid for your online training modules to make it as convenient as possible. You can complete the training on your own schedule and from anywhere, rather than attending in-person sessions.
